Designing and developing a sophisticated Framer website for a film noir author and film critic — blending editorial credibility with seamless multi-format book purchasing, wrapped in an immersive noir visual identity.
About the Project
Bernie Dowling is an author of film noir crime sagas and a serious film critic and scholar. Despite a body of work spanning multiple books and formats, he had no central digital home to showcase his writing or guide readers to purchase. I designed and developed a Framer website that serves as both an author portfolio and a conversion-focused bookstore — establishing Bernie's authority while making it effortless for readers to buy.
The Challenge
The site had to do two things at once: position Bernie as a credible film scholar and drive book sales across multiple platforms and formats (Amazon, Audible, Apple Books). On top of that, the design needed to authentically capture the essence of film noir — dark, dramatic, and cinematic — without tipping into pastiche or feeling dated.
The Solution
Three pillars shaped the build:
Film Noir Visual Identity — Built a monochromatic design system anchored in bold black-and-white aesthetics, high-contrast layouts, dramatic typography, and cinematic compositions. A warm beige accent preserves readability while reinforcing the vintage feel — immediately communicating the subject matter without a single word.
Multi-Format Purchase Architecture — Designed an intuitive book showcase system displaying all purchase options (Kindle, Paperback, Audible) with clear, platform-specific CTAs. Comparison layouts let readers choose their preferred format at a glance, while curated descriptions, key themes, and "Behind the Screen" author insights add editorial depth beyond a standard product listing.
Dual Positioning as Author & Scholar — Structured content to serve both casual noir fans and serious film enthusiasts through "Meet the Mind Behind the Books" sections, research and writing process content, and reader testimonials highlighting both storytelling quality and historical accuracy — cementing Bernie's authority across both audiences.
